Mount Ranier by Sherry Icardi

October 2026 - Mount Ranier

About the Image(s)

Taken on my daughter’s private beach below their home set high on a hill. It was quite a hike down, but so glad I could get a full image of the volcano. Originally I processed it as a color image, but found the constant haze around the area really showed more detail with the black and white. Shot as a series of images in portrait mode and merged, then reduced dimensions to include most of the base….but not all. Impossible to get it into a usable format with website size restrictions. Mt. Ranier is 89 miles from her home and her porch has a view of the very tip. Reducing it to required size has distorted it a little, particularly in the sky (regardless of color or black and white). original that distortion is not obvious…but with 1 mb limit it degrades. Interesting that the image has very little color to begin with…except for the tree line which is green the remainder is mostly white and gray. Thus my decision to go with B&W.
Taken with Sony A1 and 300mm lens hand held.

Sherry, this is one of your more impactful images. The mountain's imposing size and illuminated summit create strong impact. To my eye, the choice of black and white works very well - kudos on the choice.

Another nice job on the reflection - without it, the mountain loses its grandeur - here you accentuated it. The shoreline and the hazy foothills create depth - again, kudos. The haze itself contributes to the sense of distance and scale, and the overall scene conveys a quiet, yet powerful presence.

The most noticeable distraction is a vertical tonal boundary about one-third of the way across the image, particularly visible in the sky. You lost me a bit with your processing process, but it does appear consistent with a stitching or processing mismatch, so I would revisit the merged original before attributing it entirely to the website's pixel restriction.

I would also allow slightly more room beneath the reflection, if available, because its lowest point feels crowded by the bottom edge.

Finally, gently lifting the shadows along the nearly black shoreline could reveal some detail while retaining its role as a visual anchor.

Overall, this is a most compelling landscape with strong impact and visual interest (one of your best) supported by a quieter story of the mountain overlooking still water.
