About the Image(s)

The image was taken on May 21st, 2026, using a Canon R5, 24-1005mm lens at 00mm and f11. I used manual settings with auto ISO and auto white balance. Shutter speed was 1/800 and hand held.
The subject is the gondolier rowing guests through the narrow canals of Venice, Italy. My goal for this photo was finding a canal that was narrow enough to limit passage of the gondola’s to a narrow “follow me” path through the canal. Larger canals were more a scene of chaos, sometimes with walkways and people on the sides of the canal. This canal also allowed me to capture the buildings on each side and limit the impact of the clear blue sky above. It was a calm scene, not like the rest of Venice and yet, iconic of Venice.
I used Adobe Lightroom for post processing with a portrait crop and masks the manage the colors of the gondolier and manage shadows and contrast.

Gary,
I love this image and wish I had taken it. This is a very strong travel photograph with an unmistakable sense of place-there is absolutely no doubt that we're looking at Venice. The composition creates a visual journey with excellent depth. Placing the gondola low in the frame and slightly off-center anchors the scene while the passengers and gondolier add life, scale, and a genuine human element - although I wish we could see the gondolier's face. Nonetheless, the soft side lighting and subtle tonal variations invite the viewer to linger and explore the image face or no face :-)

In my Visual Feedback, I wanted to offer an alternative interpretation. Since the title is Gondolier, that's what I focused on.

I used a square crop, a slight vignette, and a flip to place greater emphasis on the gondola and the gondolier. I realize that I sacrificed some of the canal's grandeur, but I did so in favor of a more intimate and subject-driven presentation. The original portrait crop emphasizes place declaring "This is Venice," but I used a square crop because of the title, i.e., "Gondolier" I'd love your thoughts.

Our craft of photography is very diverse and subjective, open to many personal interpretations. I acknowledge everything Butch says and I don't mind his alternate version, but I prefer seeing a little bit of sky as in your image. To me, the sky tells us where the buildings end and provide a definite stopping point. It's fortunate there's no distinct writing or signage in the scene, because then any flip of the image would not sit well, unless it was removed. Overall, a great image Gary, well done.   Posted: 07/03/2026 13:29:00

I knew exactly where you were when I just peaked at the image! Venice the city of canals. I like most that you chose to honor the Gondolier! I can't imagine this is the most glamorous of jobs and their job can not be easy. You have honored that effort and shown Venice from a native Venetian perspective! I do agree with Ian about the blue sky...I like that small patch at the top! Since I can be claustrophobic that should not surprise anyone! Well done Gary!   Posted: 07/07/2026 18:33:06

Both interpretations are quite valid. Personally, I like the close-up showing the gondolier and the passengers.   Posted: 07/12/2026 03:12:42
