Shiprock with Aurora by Raymond Tice

December 2025 - Shiprock with Aurora

About the Image(s)

So, this last September I saw my first aurora and in early November I saw my second one. I was on a photo trip with 12 others organized by National Parks at Night to the Bisti Badlands and Shiprock in northern New Mexico. Shiprock is a volcanic remnant, formed about 30 million years ago. The structure is sacred to the Navajo people and stands out as a striking landmark visible from afar. While at Shiprock, one of our group leaders noticed that behind us to the north an aurora was showing. So, we packed up our gear and moved to the south side and took photos. This photo was taken with my Nikon D850 camera, iso 500, 15mm, f/2.8, 10 sec exposure. In Lightroom, I straightened and cropped the original, adjusted the tone and presence sliders, used denoise, removed a airplane track, and muted the town lights to the right. These lights are from the town of Shiprock some 3 miles away as the crow flies; I thought about removing them but decided that they are part of the scene.

Raymond - this is a beautiful capture, congrats, it's an attention grabber. Also, just so you know - when I edit a nature image, I'm not trying to make it something it wasn't. I'm trying to reveal the part of the scene that made me stop and raise the camera or review an image in the first place. Sometimes that means cropping tight to isolate a gesture. Sometimes it means toning down a bright area that's stealing attention. Sometimes it means simplifying the chaos of a landscape so the eye flows where it should.

I'm not altering nature - I'm revealing the best of it. I'm not following rules - I'm following the story and that's at the heart of how I edit and why I photograph the way I do. So please don't take offense at my suggestion to remove the city lights on the right side of the frame,

definitely no offense taken as whether to leave or not has been a major discussion among my local photo colleagues so have decided to have it both ways. Thanks. Ray   Posted: 12/15/2025 16:29:58
