November 2025 - Desert Rainbow

About the Image(s)

Canon R5 ??“ Canon 70-200 @200mm ??“ ISO 500 ??“ f9 ??“ 1/640th

This image is almost embarrassing to talk about. I was watching TV after a brief (and rare) rain shower when my wife Bobbi said, “Look at that rainbow.” For context, we live in the Catalina Foothills of Tucson, with an “up close and personal” view of Catalina Mountains from our back deck.

Our home, as many do in Tucson, has a ‘great room’ (living room, dining room, breakfast nook, kitchen) separated from our patio by four floor to ceiling windowpanes and two glass sliding doors: it’s almost like bringing the outside into the house- we’re most fortunate.

When I saw the rainbow, I wasn’t sure just how long it would last, so I quickly picked up my camera and dialed in f9 and 1/640th second Tv and under exposed by a full stop (the R5 was already set for Auto ISO) and got of a couple of quick shots handheld. I’m glad I did; had I stopped the put the camera on my tripod and use a lower ISO the ‘bow’ wouldn’t have had the vibrance you see here.

Butch - cool rainbow - very fortunate. And the Saguaros in the foreground are cool. I have a better idea where you live.
I would have opened up the foreground a bit even though it is in the shadow of a mountain. I think it is a keeper - 36x24 metal print on the wall.   Posted: 11/12/2025 20:20:41

Rainbows are so incredibly beautiful! Your image does them justice! Whenever I see one I will run out and attempt an image. But in Florida the background is always YUCK! Flat, over populated and uninspiring . Your background makes the image very dramatic! Well done!   Posted: 11/16/2025 20:52:39

well done is right and a "back yard" photo - what a view you have and being able to get that enlarged a rainbow is just super. I agree with Dave that a little and I mean little more light on the foreground shadows might be interesting. Be interesting to see what else you might get out your windows.
