Shi Shi Beach by Peter Cheung

July 2025 - Shi Shi Beach

About the Image(s)

This photo was taken two years ago at Shi Shi Beach and Point of Arches in Olympic National Park, WA. The Point of the Arches in Shi Shi Beach is very picturesque, especially at sunset. The beach is also full of colorful marine life. We camped on the beach for one night to capture the sunset, but unfortunately, it was too foggy that night and we couldn't see anything. The fog lifted the next morning and I took this photo and converted it to black and white. The camera settings are Nikon D850, Nikon 14-24mm, f/18, 17mm, 169 seconds, ISO-31. I used a big stopper filter to allow for long exposures and to smooth out the clouds.

I absolutely love the concept and the execution vis-a-vis your big stopper filter. If I were judging I would award this the highest score, however, I think it might have even more impact if the perspective had been a bit lower. Please correct me if I'm wrong but this appears to have been taken at eye level. - nonetheless, a image worthy of a wall :-)   Posted: 07/09/2025 18:48:12

Peter - I am full of envy - I was in the exact same location several years earlier on a guided photo group from the National Parks at Night photo outing group - spent 3 nights, completely clouded in and those leading rock lines were completely covered with sand. Still a wonderful location and you did great capturing it. Note that the rock formation on the far left looks like a sitting ape. Ray   Posted: 07/09/2025 23:30:22

Another superb image Peter. Your finished image is well worth your efforts and planning. While I agree with Butch about maybe taking it from a lower viewpoint, in this case I agree with what you have done. Your viewpoint here, provides some separation at the area between the end of the "leading" rocks and the distant rocks. A lower viewpoint here might not let us see enough of the water in between.   Posted: 07/15/2025 00:46:58

Im not sure that I would have had the "vision" to capture this, and while I enjoy landscapes I find that my eye is much to constrained to think this creatively! So kudos Peter on this marvelous image! Apparently a popular spot for many! It reminds me of the Black Beach in Iceland. Most likely because of the transition to BNW. A special image, Peter!   Posted: 07/15/2025 16:20:28

Peter, a great image and I like the conversion to B&W. The leading lines of the rocks pulls the viewer into the image and the large formations in the distance. I see water between the rows of rocks and the appearance is of a sandy, difficult area to move through. I like the perspective, keeping Butch's comments in mind, of the camera elevation that show just a bit of open water after the rows of rocks and before the formations.   Posted: 07/28/2025 19:43:10
