Sunset at Bass Harbor by Raymond Tice

July 2025 - Sunset at Bass Harbor

About the Image(s)

Hi everyone, I have migrated from a Flower Group, which is a subject matter where I have spent a lot of my photography time, given that my wife grows and sells flowers. But, I am also very interested in ‘scape photography and look forward to sharing my images and getting/giving comments. This image is of the 1858 Bass Harbor Head Light Station which marks the entrance to Bass Harbor and Blue Hill Bay on the southwest corner of Mt Desert Island in Maine. Photo was taken using a Nikon D850 with 14mm lens, iso 64, 1/8 sec at f/16, -3 EV, on a tripod. Yes, I should have used HDR. One note ??“ the light station is a big draw for photographers but parking is limited to about 20 cars and the area for taking photos is even more limited allowing only about 10 photographers able to perch on the rocks with their tripods to catch sunset so patience and a willingness to arrive hours before is a necessity.

Welcome aboard Raymond, and you certainly started with a high impact image. As we know, Impact, Visual Interest, and Storytelling are the fundamental characteristics that most often succeed in competitions; thus, these three aspects of an image need to be the hook that grabs and keeps the viewer's attention and outweigh any minor technical deficiencies. And your image captures all three - Impact for sure and a ton of visual interest, and a story - the sunburst and the light on the rocks, well, they rock! Nice job. Two issues though, the image appears a touch over-processed and I'm unsure of what the white/light/bright specs are on the rocks. But as I wrote, the capture is terrific and outweighs the minor technical issues. Look forward to seeing more of your images.   Posted: 07/09/2025 19:08:23

Thanks Butch - thanks for your comments - how not to over process an image can be a difficult decision depending on the monitor used, so I wont say this image is not. The white bright specs on the rocks are barnacles - do you find them distracting as I can reduce their brightness? Ray   Posted: 07/09/2025 22:37:16

Welcome Ray!! And a beautiful image to start with in Scapes.

We relocated to Florida in 2017 and I miss the stunning images with rocks and hills ! While the starburst drags my eye into the top of the images.....but there is so much interest on the hill and rocks that my eye flows back to the remainder of the image. This is a really magnificent spot and I'm sure my patience would have waned quickly having to wait long hours to assure a spot. Your patience is admirable and the wait certainly justifies the time.   Posted: 07/15/2025 15:47:34

Hi Ray and I add my welcome to you joining our group. Seascapes are one of my passions, but as we live on the east coast down here, most of my seascapes are of sunrises. Your image is excellent with great mood in the sky showing the threat of possible bad weather about to strike. Your composition and use of the elements before you at the time of capture are all strong and work well together in this one.   Posted: 07/24/2025 00:49:08

Thanks Ian - fortunately, the location of the Light station on Mt Desert Island allows for taking sunset photos. If one had access to a boat, it would also be possible to take sunrise photos as well, depending on the time of year. But yes, we mostly get sunrise photos over the Atlantic and sunset photos from the barrier islands off the NC coast.   Posted: 07/24/2025 01:05:55

Welcome Ray, you've started with a great image. I like the foreground rocks and the perch of the lighthouse atop the bluff. The sun is an immediate draw for my eye and the dark clouds overhead hold my eye down and in the image. Obviously it took the patience and early arrival you mentioned, well done.   Posted: 07/28/2025 19:37:42
