About the Image(s)

Thomas Point Lighthouse
An early morning shot {on a boat) in the Chesapeake Bay of the iconic Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse that was built in 1875 and is still an active Beacon of Navigation. The lighthouse is one of twelve Maritime National Historic Landmarks after earning that designation in 1999. The last time it was was inhabited was 1986.

This image was taken with my first DSLR a Nikon D5100. It stand alone in the bay, guiding huge cargo ships into the Bay. From there they go to the Baltimore Docks for unloading, but until their slot is available the wait in the bay. It was still dark when we first arrived and waited the dawn. This was taken predawn so very high ISO. I've been able to enhance with many of the new tools in LR and PS to improve the quality of the image.

Another lovely image Sherry; that said, I'm always hesitant to modify them. Nonetheless, in my VF since we read left to right, I flipped the image, cropped in, removed some distractions from the corner below the lighthouse and the antenna that I didn't think helped the image, then straightened the horizon line and added texture and contrast to help it pop and finally a slight vignette   Posted: 03/14/2025 16:03:53

Just to let you know I did miss something when processing, since I used LR to darken the sky a bit, I missed checking the mask in one spot. At the top of the antenna. I will adjust when I return home since now I can't take my eye off of it. I am currently in Costa Rica and leave for the Cloud Forrest early tomorrow. I'll be back 4/1 so I won't be able to post correction. But I have actually had several people bid for this shot in a charity auction, it is very dear to most Maryland ( Baltimore folks mainly) residents because of the history. It is a unique shape and has withstood many storms in Baltimore Harbour. I really enjoyed my 9 year residence in Baltimore, probably my favorite place we called home.

I have a particular preference for the soft pink and blue of sunrise, which is why I presented it as is, but I do indeed realize Butch's image would be very popular with many. In fact probably more would favor the "punch"..   Posted: 03/24/2025 22:17:39

A great image Sherry. I'm sorry Butch, but I'm going to respectfully disagree with you on this one. When reading left to right, I feel the lighthouse staff looking out to sea, from left to right. I also expect communication to be by both light and radio, so the antenna for me serves a very valuable use and is an integral part of lighthouses of these days. Sunrise colours (and sunsets) often have times of pastel shades and don't always need to pop. Pastel colours can bring a sense of calm to an image. But they are just my thoughts and not intended as to argue with Butch. Our craft of photography is a wonderful and versatile thing, with none of us being right nor wrong, we just see things differently.   Posted: 03/17/2025 06:50:06

Ian take a look I'm surprised you missed "my error". You're detailed eye almost always picks them up!   Posted: 03/24/2025 22:19:09

Hahaha, yes I missed that issue. I'm thrilled to see it has done well in a charity auction. It's really good to see your photography going to a good cause and also appreciated by other people. If you're going to fix that masking issue at the top of the antenna, why not those other ones either side of the lighthouse, just while you're at it.   Posted: 03/24/2025 23:18:22
