Winter in Yellowstone by Dave Ficke

February 2025 - Winter in Yellowstone

About the Image(s)

Hi everyone - I spent the first 10 days in Northern Yellowstone National Park and missed the January discussion. The temp was a mild 18 degrees during the day - 6 at night. Just right!?

The Lamar Valley is considered the Seregetti of North America with herds of Bison, wolves, elk, coyotes and a host of other critters and birds.

This is a shot taken with a Nikon Z6II with a 80-400 mm lens at f5.6, ISO 100 and 1/800 second handheld, 2 stops down.
You may ask why 1/800 a second? I was hand holding and I just did not want to miss the shot because of camera shake or any other issues.

Post, cropped, contrast, shadows, blacks, midtones.

Dave, a gorgeous shot, I love the simplicity and how you isolated your subject. BTW - I too tend to shoot with higher Tv when hand holding, it just makes sense.

I think this image is good to go as is however, I did darkened the background and brighten the subject in my VF - but the site won't let me upload - I'll try again later, but I thought a touch more contrast between your subject and the fore and backgrounds would help the image pop.   Posted: 02/09/2025 18:03:14

A great image Dave, the tree with all the frost pulled my eye to it immediately. I do agree that a bit of darkening of the background helps the tree stand out even more. I also agree that a higher shutter speed is essential in the cold, because those temperatures introduce a lot of photographer shake. Yellowstone is a favorite location for me and the winter offers a lot to see without many visitors, but the weather can be brutal.   Posted: 02/13/2025 23:08:10

A strong image Dave. While I'm down here in our summer, it shows me what it's like up there in your winter. You should be very pleased with this one, but I'm still going to the beach tomorrow.   Posted: 02/16/2025 03:45:10
