North rim Strike by Butch Mazzuca

February 2025 - North rim Strike

About the Image(s)

About every other year I travel to the Grand Canyon in late July-early August to take advantage of of the monsoon storms that roll from the South Rim to the North Rim - I shot shit image three years ago from the deck of the Visitor’s Center at the North Rim - The name of the game is capture bolts without getting fried - the usual distance we like to keep from a strike is 10 miles and this one just made it. Canon 1DX - Canon 24-70 @28mm ISO 50 (mechanical) f18 - 1/8th second Tv and a Lighting Trigger brand lightning trigger

WOW! Impactful image. The image embodies the power of those lightening strikes. I really like the use of B&W. I think it adds menace to the image and makes it embody the reality of the event. Nicely done.   Posted: 02/13/2025 17:59:22

A great image Butch. The lightning bolt is in the center and reaches from the top of the image, through the clouds, and finally striking the canyon. My eye is immediately pulled to it and its impact on the image. I like the black and white processing and your work on the clouds and canyon to add contrast and give the image a real sense of a storm coming. Great job!   Posted: 02/13/2025 23:03:41

This is a great image Butch, loads of impact, visually and actually. Your converting it to B&W is a good move as it removes all the distracting colour and forces us to concentrate on the lightning itself. You really should be pleased with this one and not refer to it as a sh#t image, you're being too hard on yourself. Hahaha.   Posted: 02/16/2025 03:33:42
