Downtown Pittsburgh from Mt Washington by Sherry Icardi

January 2025 - Downtown Pittsburgh from Mt Washington

About the Image(s)

I rarely shoot cityscapes, but the last time I was in Pittsburgh, I decided to venture up to the top of Mt. Washington (South of The Point) to take some shots of the city. This view is looking east. And I liked the bridges all lined up and the main part of the city in the background. "The Point" is the meeting of three rivers, the Ohio, Allegheny and Monogahela Rivers. The Steelers' Stadium is to the left of this image and has a beautiful view of the point. I think this was taken with my Nikon D750 and .....but no idea which lens.....On a tripod. Pittsiburgh was once known as a Steel Town and a very dirty and smoggy city because of those Steel Mills. They are long gone and Pittsburgh is now a very clean and attractive city.

I never realized Pittsburgh was such a beautiful city - ah, just kidding :-). I traveled there several times on business before retiring and it truly is a beautiful city, at least the parts that I visited and I think you captured it beautifully - that said, I thought the tree in the center of the image needed pruning in my VF   Posted: 01/07/2025 21:31:50

Interesting, I tried taking it into PS to remove said tree parts and a hotel that was in the scene to begin with, and the impact on the other side of the river was not very pleasing, so I just enlarged the tree a little to hide the hotel, which did work....You managed to get it looking much better than my attempt....did you do it in small pieces....or one large repair? Because I really do like yours a great deal better than my attempt.   Posted: 01/08/2025 21:02:56

Generative fill - two attempts, then when that failed, I cloned and pasted - still a beautiful city :-)   Posted: 01/08/2025 21:31:22

Thanks...I tried the Generative Fill and gave up...should have gone a little further. And it is indeed a nice city, and in particular the views from Mt. Washington!   Posted: 01/15/2025 20:08:07

Hi Sherry, I like the view of the city and agree with Butch's work to minimize the tree. I like cityscapes and it's always a challenge to find the right vantage point. It's a very nice image and took some effort to find the right location. My only suggestion after eliminating the tree was to crop the sky down a bit. I think that would add a greater focus on the city.   Posted: 01/16/2025 22:48:17

A great cityscape Sherry. Good composition and use of foreground and background elements to bring depth into this one. I hope you don't mind, but I had a little play with it too. I went to my old favorite Tonal Contrast in Nik, to give the tree foliage and buildings a little "pop". The sky went for that ride as well, and I'm not so sure about that part. When I threw it into PS, I grabbed Butch's version, by mistake instead of yours. Sorry guys.   Posted: 01/17/2025 23:39:14
