Balmoral Pre Dawn by Ian Cambourne

January 2025 - Balmoral Pre Dawn

About the Image(s)

I've delved into the archives for this month. This image was taken a couple of years ago while on a sunrise shoot at a harbour suburb named Balmoral. This image was taken just as the sun was thinking about rising above the horizon. The scene was predominantly backlit and exposed for the sunrise colours. I hope to revisit this spot again before this summer is over. Details are: Sony A850; Sigma 50mm lens; ISO 100; f11; 25 seconds exposure (no nd filters) and tripod mounted.

A lovely and tranquil image Ian, nice job with it. That said, I thought the image lacked a clear center of interest and the bright right side of the image dominated, so in my VF I 1) cropped down to eliminate some of the featureless sky, 2) opened the shadows on the peninsula, 3) removed most of the bright reflection along the shore in the bottom-center of the frame as I thought it drew the eye and 4) added a slight vignette centered on the peninsula   Posted: 01/07/2025 20:58:53

Beautiful still morning and lovely shot. I really like the boat in the image, tells me this is a peaceful time of day... the water is incredibly calm and soothes my eye as I look at the image. I would consider cropping as Butch suggested and lightening the shadows, there is beauty in those areas that would enhance the image even more.   Posted: 01/15/2025 20:39:08

A nice image Ian, it's a scene that feels early morning with the calm water and colors in the sky. I would also consider cropping from the top to eliminate some of the sky as it doesn't add much to the scene. I also considered if a crop on the bottom to eliminate the sand might work, although it does provide some foreground. And I also would reduce shadows on the peninsula. Good work with the long exposure and I'd be interested in the results of a revisit you mentioned.   Posted: 01/16/2025 22:36:49
