Shadows of Trees at Zion by Ted Newman

September 2023 - Shadows of Trees at Zion

About the Image(s)

I took this during a hike in Zion looking across from the trail, which was on a ridge to the face of another peak. The sun was behind me, providing the shadows.

Fujifilm XT4 with 16-80mm lens at 24mm, f16, ISO 200

This is a striking view but for me, it looks a lot more dramatic in mono. I used calculations and found this gave me quite a powerful version using the green channels.   Posted: 09/06/2023 09:13:13

Thanks for that suggestion! I'll try it.   Posted: 09/06/2023 11:22:35

This is very nice composition Ted. Definitively the shadow on the rocks create a special atmosphere. I agree with Nigel that a monochrome version would make this photo more compelling. The highlights in the rock are a little blow out and you loose details there.

The way that some of the shadows are fuzzy while others are sharp interests me and makes me wonder how that happened. (Wind on only part of the ridge?)

I don't know that I'd prefer monochrome but would suggest bringing down the highlights in the cliffs.   Posted: 09/06/2023 15:52:15

I have a feeling that the five trees on the left are real and the ones on the right are shadows. Image has good visual impact and interest. Nicely done Ted.   Posted: 09/07/2023 07:29:03

I won't repeat what the other commentators have said. However, just as an experiment, I might try cropping out the right side, so that the image is primarily focused on the four trees on the left against the backdrop of the cliff. Maybe this might produce a stronger focal point. Just an idea!   Posted: 09/11/2023 14:53:01
