Cattail Marsh by Mike Patterson

September 2023 - Cattail Marsh

About the Image(s)

I'm always attracted to images that create bands of layers and textures. Again, I return to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. I captured this shot of water in the foreground, cattails in the middle ground and trees in the background.

Mike, I think you were successful in realizing your goal to create a natural landscape with layers and texture. However, I am struggling with this image. Maybe is because the panorama format. I would like to see a little more of the trees in the background to open a little bit more the space and make the image less claustrophobic. I also believe you have a very flat image. Maybe increasing contrast and some selective use of layers to increase saturation could help it.
best wishes

Mike, please don't shoot me but I really felt this image was very flat and had no center of interest so I added an Angora Goat. Still friends I hope?   Posted: 09/04/2023 19:36:02

As the guys have already commented on, the image is very flat and I'm struggling to find a focal point. As you are drawn to images with layers and textures, what about lightening the lighter areas and darkening the darks and changing the blend mode. Pretty much the same as Michele. I'm also not sure the water belongs there but it's probably not deep enough to add a ship as well as a goat.   Posted: 09/06/2023 09:23:04

I agree with most of the comments. I do like your use of foreground, middle ground and background.   Posted: 09/06/2023 11:28:08

I agree with Michele. The "cut off tree" does not help. Otherwise it looks great.   Posted: 09/07/2023 18:31:34
