Great idea about capturing a drone (I assume) shot of the highway wandering through the dunes. Everything is perfectly composed. The highway works to draw the eye into the image. Unfortunately, while a perfect composition, I don't find anything visually appealing. That's not anything you can control! An expensive image with good leading line. Nice light. I first though it would be good to have a car driving on the road, then I put my readers on and saw there is actually a car.

This is a very nice aerial image of a desert landscape with beautiful light. I appreciate your attempt to use the road as a leading line to guide the viewer's eye into the image.
However, I do not think the image works quite as well as it could. In my opinion, aerial photography is often most effective when it conveys the complexity and patterns of the landscape, which is usually achieved by flying higher or by using a more straight-down perspective.
The area to the right of the road contains interesting shadows, and I think that, had you flown higher, you might have been able to use them to create more intriguing shapes or even suggest an imaginary figure.

The viewpoint of this image could almost have been achieved from any elevated position along the road (although I suspect there were none available!). As a result, the aerial perspective does not add as much to the image as it might have.

I agree with Spring's observation that the car gets lost against the dark asphalt and does not stand out as a strong focal point.

I don't think there's a focal point on this image John. It shows a great expanse of desert and a road with a very small car. If I were taking this I would have been inclined to take it at a much lower angle and to make more of the road by taking the start point into the corner and to perhaps selectively colour the car to make it stand out as Michele and Spring point out. The other thing, using the image as it is, could still be to crop into the corner for the road but then make more use of the shadows by darkening them down to make highly contrasting pools of shade against the light.   Posted: 08/17/2026 15:14:36

This is a nice aerial image of a vast desert landscape bathed in beautiful golden-hour light, with the winding road lending itself as a strong leading line that guides the viewer's eye through the scene. The dark road contrasts nicely with the warm sand, while the tiny car emphasizes the enormous scale and solitude of the landscape. The low sunlight brings out texture and dimension in the dunes, with cooler long shadows adding contrast to the glowing highlights. There is a large expanse of relatively quiet sand in the lower-right side of the frame and a subtle crop could make the road even more dominant without sacrificing the sense of scale. Also agree with Spring that I didn't notice the dark car at first, as it was blending in with the road.

John, this is a very different type of image. The first thing I did was go to Google Earth to find out exactly what the North Algodones Dunes Wilderness was. I feel this is somewhat of a documentary image, and it is very well done. The lighting certainly conveys the heat and dryness of the area. It has good color, sharpness, and definition.
