You had a great concept -- a lovely shoreline with waves rolling in and a few rocks or sea stacks in the distance. A couple of ideas to improve your processing and then for future compositions: First, the image strikes me overall as too dark, especially on a clear day. I suggest upping the exposure to give it a boost of light. Second, too much of the image is in dark shadows, especially those rocks and shore in the distance. Trying lifting the shadows enough that you have a little more details. And third, the image lacks an overall focal point. I don't know what I'm supposed to be looking at. The waves are pretty but there doesn't seem to be anything to anchor my eyes. In the future, try composing an image like that with a stronger element in the frame that more clearly defines the focal point or subject of the image.   Posted: 04/01/2026 19:49:16
The main thing for me in this image is that it is 0.6 degrees out. The horizon is higher on the right than the left. I also agree about the shadows. In Camera Raw you can make a luminance mask to select a luminance range for the shadows and then amend to taste. Certainly on such a bright day I would have expected to see more in the foliage and vegetation, especially considering how bright the sea and surf is. However, you may have done the PP this way in order to concentrate the eye on the sea? I like the waves contrasting against the water. It's a nice curved bay and the amount of sky is just right to me.   Posted: 04/01/2026 21:49:32
Good inputs. Appreciated!   Posted: 04/03/2026 17:19:58
John, I agree with Mike and Nigel comments. The horizon is offset and the image lack of a clear anchor point. I also think the light is presenting some blue dominance. I understand you captured this image in the middle of the day with bright light and to me this is an example why we should accept this is not a good time to take pictures. I think you can try to save this image by converting in black and white and cropping it a little.
Best wishes

John, aside from the minor horizon misalignment, which you've corrected, the composition is quite strong. The frame demonstrates an effective application of the rule of thirds along the horizontal axis, and the repeating patterns formed by the wave breaks and rocks introduce compelling visual rhythm and texture.
From a lighting standpoint, capturing this scene during golden hour (either early morning or late evening) would likely enhance tonal contrast, shadow definition, and overall dynamic range. That said, the absence of a singular focal anchor is not necessarily a limitation; many successful coastal and landscape compositions rely instead on distributed points of interest and emergent patterning to guide visual flow.
Overall, this is a well-executed rendering of an iconic Pacific Coast Highway vista, with solid compositional choices and strong environmental context.
