Heavenly Falls by Dennis Lee

December 2025 - Heavenly Falls

About the Image(s)

The Heavenly Falls at the Portland Japanese Garden is a serene, multi-tiered waterfall tucked within the verdant Strolling Pond Garden. Its gentle, cascading flow is designed to evoke tranquility and reflect the harmony between water, stone, and lush plant life, which is an iconic example of traditional Japanese landscape aesthetics.

This definitely looks like a "heavenly" scene! A couple of suggestions: The color of the water in the waterfall looks unnatural -- almost like they've put a blue dye in the water. However, in my opinion, the main problem with the composition is that there are too many focal points. I.e. what are we supposed to be looking at? The waterfall on the left, the rock in the middle and the little structure on the right all compete for attention. My eyes keep going from one to the other, without a clear definition of the subject. Maybe if you had been able to move around more, pick one object at the subject and then use the other two as accents.   Posted: 12/02/2025 02:04:00

Hi Mike, I really appreciate the feedback on the bluish color. I've adjusted the color to remove the blue in the water and I've cropped it tighter to bring the attention to the stone lantern and gave it a little more vignette.   Posted: 12/04/2025 21:16:01

Dennis this image is the essence of tranquility. Like Mike said, the water in the falls seems to be slightly blue or off color. Love the water, stone, japanese stone lantern and plant life. Reflections are an added plus.Strong composition.   Posted: 12/04/2025 17:45:26

Thanks Tom! I agree with you and Mike. I've tried to fix the color and crop. See above for new image attached.   Posted: 12/04/2025 21:17:11

Dennis, your adjustment has significantly improved the image. However, I think you can still crop a little more tighter of what you did. The bright green leaves in the foreground are distracting. More you can improve the waterfall and make the major elements more prominent by increasing the brightness in the water and make the green area darker. You have a very bright zone on the right where the branches do not have any leaves that drag my eye. I took the liberty to play with your image a little. I made the waterfall brighter and take down saturation in the water so the "bluish" tonality has gone completely. I have darkened the area around the waterfall and the main tree and cropped the image tighter, so the distracting bright green leaves are almost gone.
Let it me to know what do you think

best

Michele
