Water Taxi ferrying people in Queensway Bay by Dennis Lee

July 2025 - Water Taxi ferrying people in Queensway Bay

About the Image(s)

A water taxi ferrying people in Queensway Bay with the Shoreline Marina and Long Beach cityscape behind it. This image was taken from the deck of the Queen Mary. I debated between leaving the image in color or converting it to black-and-white. I settled on black-and-white as I thought that the overall color added a distraction from the subject. I look forward to your critiques.

Taken with Sony A7III at 45mm (but cropped in), f/11, 1/320s, ISO 100.

Hi Dennis, this is a very nice cityscape image. I think the ferry is a strong composition element because it fill some of the empty space of the water. I think the black and white does it work, but I would be curious to see the color version too.

best wishes

Hi Michele, thank you for the comments. The ferry moving diagonally through the frame as a composition element (without any other boats near it that would have otherwise served as a distraction), was what drew my eye to take this image. I agree that the negative space of the water worked in this respect. I have attached the color version here for comparison. Best regards.   Posted: 07/21/2025 15:02:59

Very sharp image and well planned composition. I think color would be good too especially for vacation like settings.   Posted: 07/16/2025 22:53:14

Hi John, I appreciate the comments. I have posted the color version above too for comparison. I do think the color also works for a vacation landscape photo like this one. Thanks.   Posted: 07/21/2025 15:04:53

Dennis, I too like the ferry coming diagonally across the bay. Being a sailor, I am amazed at the sailboats in that huge marina. This is an excellent land/sea scape. It is cropped perfectly and everything is tack sharp. Normally I would think the sky would need some detail but in this case it helps to draw you right to the city and marina. Very nice.   Posted: 07/17/2025 22:35:10

Hi Tom, thanks for the comment. Yes, there are a lot of sailboats moored in that marina and this is a pretty busy harbor too, being right next to the Port of Los Angeles and a cruise ship terminal. There are definitely plenty of marine traffic during the day. I agree that the sky could have used some detail, especially if there was a cloud cover that I could have used to my advantage. I appreciate the comment about the composition and sharpness. Thanks again.   Posted: 07/21/2025 15:11:35

Good composition Dennis. I prefer the Black and white version. You mention that the colour is a bit distracting and I agree, especially with the marina area being so busy.   Posted: 07/22/2025 09:32:57
