Yosemite Firefall by Spring Zhang

July 2025 - Yosemite Firefall

About the Image(s)

This is called the Yosemite Firefall and it's a rare phenomenon that only happens during a very specific time of the year at the Yosemite National Park in California. Every mid-late February for about two weeks, the setting sun shines on the Bridal Veil Waterfall, illuminating the water making it look like a lava flowing down the cliff. This photo was taken this February with a 70-200m lens. I used Color Grading in Lightroom to bring out the brilliant color of the waterfall.

Spring this is a "phenomenal" image of this spectacular event Mother Nature offers to us for free....I think this is a winning image in any context and would be stand out hanged on the wall.

Best wishes

Michele

I agree with Michele - well captured. A reminder to us that when these events come around you have to make the effort to go out and capture them.   Posted: 07/04/2025 07:41:11

Spring, certainly agree with Michele and Nigel. Breathtaking!!! I gather it is the angle that the sun hits the falls. Hope the falls never erode the cliff to a point that this rare phenomenon ceases. Hope generations and generations get to see this! Nature is amazing!   Posted: 07/04/2025 12:35:55

Hi, thank you all for your kind comments. Yes, like Nigel said, we need to make the effort to go out and capture the beauty of nature. I've been living in California for many years, even though I knew about this phenomenon, I never went to see it until I got into photography. I consider myself lucky to be able to get this photo on my first visit. I will probably be making more trips there in the future for more photos.   Posted: 07/08/2025 20:36:47

This is such a beautiful shot and I really appreciate the amount of work and patience that it took to get it. I have seen videos of photographers gathering around the Valley floor to witness this phenomenal that only happens once a year and hope for the conditions to work in their favor. This photo is an exemplar of that. It's simply stunning.   Posted: 07/19/2025 16:52:35
