Roanoke Island Inn by Tom Buckard

July 2025 - Roanoke Island Inn

About the Image(s)

The Roanoke Island Inn is a rustic inn set in a historic 1860 home with beautiful gardens. It is located in Manteo, NC. Directly across the street is a marsh with Roanoke Marsh Lighthouse on the open water side of it. The town is very quaint and a lot to do. Sunrises take your breath away.

Image taken with a Nikon D850, 8:47 AM, Aperture priority, Speed 1/120th of a sec, ISO 64, Focal Length 24mm, F/22, Lens was a Nikkor 24 - 70mm.

A good capture Tom and looks like an interesting house. The only thing I'd mention is that I personally would have cropped to the base of the walkway but as I say, personal choice. I would imagine that it would look lovely with sunlight on it.   Posted: 07/03/2025 09:46:47

Tom, I personally know this location because we had a house at the Outer Banks for few years and love going around to photograph. I think you have done a good job it capturing the soul of this location. Roanoke Island was (and still is partially) a marsh and I think that walkaway is an important element. Technically the image follows the rule of thirds, is sharp, without being overdone, and it captures well the early light of the morning with blue skies and some clouds. All together in my humble opinion an excellent image.

best wishes

Michele, I figured you would know this area. I remember you saying you had a place on the Outer Banks. Thank you for your comments. I still have a lot to learn about landscape photography.   Posted: 07/20/2025 20:31:04

What is most striking to me is the perfect composition. The walkway leading to the house perfectly draws the eye into the image and the house in the background. Can't ask for anything better than this.   Posted: 07/08/2025 13:57:30

Thanks Mike, the diagonal dock that lets to the Inn comes out to a big dock paralleling the water and when I saw this shot I thought to my self what a Classic leading line.   Posted: 07/17/2025 22:43:52

Thank you so much Spring. I am going to make a print and send it to the family that owns the Inn.   Posted: 07/17/2025 22:45:29

Beautiful image and nice composition. I agree with Nigel to crop some bottom grass.   Posted: 07/16/2025 22:49:17

John, I cropped the lower grass and dock and I liked it that way also. The lower grass does have some nice color in it though. Thank you for your comments.   Posted: 07/17/2025 22:39:59

This is a well composed image that is almost reminiscence of an oil painting. I like the boardwalk on the left of the image that serves as a leading line, drawing the viewer's eye towards the inn in the top third of the image. The green posts on the boardwalk and the greenery complemented the green roof and awnings of the inn. The dominant part of the inn on the left sits nicely on the top left intersection of the rules of the thirds, which helps to balance the image. The sky is also well exposed and the clouds adds a little character to the image.   Posted: 07/20/2025 18:19:25

Thank you Dennis, great commentary. The old Inn and the area around it is a photographers paradise.   Posted: 07/20/2025 20:26:10
