Back Cove, New Harbor ME by Tom Buckard

February 2025 - Back Cove, New Harbor ME

About the Image(s)

On one of our many trips to New England, specifically Maine, I found this small out of the way cove. It has been the source of several hundred images.

Equipment info - Nikon D300S, 1/250th of a sec, F8, ISO-200, Focal length 18, Lens Nikkor 18-200 F/2.8

This is an excellent composition. The rocks in the foreground anchor the image and the water leads the eye to the rest of the cove. Lots of interesting details in the boats and structures along the shoreline. Everything is in perfect focus. And plus, you had a beautiful sky as a backdrop. My only concern is that the rocks and rust-colored algae (?) in the foreground appear a little over-saturated and unnatural. I suggest dialing that back a bit.   Posted: 02/04/2025 13:07:46

Mike, thank you for your comments and I see what you mean about the foreground algae and will definitely try some adjustments.   Posted: 02/04/2025 13:22:32

Tom, this is a beautiful scenery and I think you have captured you well. The sky with the clouds reflected in the water add some interest and the yellow boat is adding contrast and is placed where the leading lines of the water are guiding the eye.
I think that this image could probably improve if you crop it (keeping the 2:3 ratio) taking away some of the foreground and some of the left side of the image. This would probably take care also of Mike's suggestions.

best wishes

Very nice image. I agree with the others that the cropped image is cleaner and more focused.   Posted: 02/11/2025 05:15:22

It's a good photo with nice composition. I would try to select the sky and reduce the exposure a bit and increase the exposure on the other areas. Rocks are good but feel they capture too much attention.   Posted: 02/11/2025 18:28:53
