About the Image(s)
Background: Gaztelugatxe is an islet on the coast of Basque Coast. It is connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge. On top of the island stands a hermitage Gaztelugatxeko Doniene in Basque or San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Spanish that might date back to the 10th century. The hermitage houses votive offerings from sailors who survived shipwrecks.
If you are in the Game of Throne series, this location was used for filming scenes for season seven as Dragonstone. The church in the series became a digitally created castle on top of the islet. I was there first time 12 years ago. But I did not have much time to spend there. So I promised to myself to be back one day and this is what happened two weeks ago when I was in the area for work and took off few days for discovering the area.
This image was taken early in the morning, a time of the day I particularly love. I arrived in the area about 1 hour before the blue hour and had to go down on the steep, well track trail, in the dark (I forgot my headlamp). Luckily there was a full moon and the cell phone light was working… Once I arrived to the spot it looked good I place my tripod and just had to wait for the light showing up. I was hoping for few clouds but there were not, so decided from the beginning to have very little of the sky and focus on the island. I also used a long exposure to create some atmosphere in the water. After taken this image, I climbed the 221 steps up to the hermitage. I enjoy this alone for an hour before the crowd of tourists start to showed up.
Fuji GFX100s, Fujnon 45-100 mm f/4 at 45mm, f/4 60 sec, ISO 400. White setting was on fluorescent with some manual adjustment. Used a 10 stops ND filter (Lee).
Post process, I crop to 3:2 as usual, I then made some basic adjustments including increasing contrast, opening shadows, decreasing highlights and white. I also increased clarity and finally add some dehaze. Finally I applied a selective burning of few areas do make the image more homogeneous.

Excellent landscape. The slow shutter speed and ND filter enabled you to provide an attractive softness to the waves. I also like how you composed the image -- the winding trail leads the eye directly to the hermitage. To me, the rocks and sky have an overly purplish tint. Glad you didn't fall off the trail in the darkness and tumble down the cliff!   Posted: 12/03/2024 18:39:50

HI Mike,
thank you for sharing your thoughts. Indeed, review the image on my "calibrated" monitor it was presenting a purplish tint. I have corrected it and uploading the new one. Let me know what do you think

You nailed it this time. Just a slight adjustment in the tint made a big difference.   Posted: 12/04/2024 01:38:16

Michele, this image with the slight adjustment to to tint should be entered in one of the many Salons. To me it is a sure thing for a star. This image is very striking, perfectly cropped and is a very strong composition. The earth tones in the lower left drive you right towards the bridge and then onto the hermitage. I found it so interesting that I have researched much of its history and found it extremely facinating.   Posted: 12/05/2024 14:59:15

Thank you Tom for your very kind comment. I am happy this image has raised curiosity in you to explore more the story of this place. It was worth to be there early when nobody was around.   Posted: 12/05/2024 16:16:09

Lovely composition and crop as mentioned. It's a shame you didn't get better light to work with in such a photogenic spot but you've done well with it Michele   Posted: 12/06/2024 21:57:20

Thank you Nigel, I think all together this light was ok for this kind of image. The day after a storm arrived and it would have been a different and more dramatic image, but I was on another place...
Best wishes of Happy Holiday

Good composition and powerful scenery. Don't know if more brightness and warmer color tune change anything.   Posted: 12/10/2024 18:52:43

A serene and pristine image with just the nature and nothing else. Strong composition,I like how the stairs leads you from the left of the frame to the hermitage at the center top of the frame, and also the soft blurred out waves lead to the islet.   Posted: 12/11/2024 07:50:19

Nice diagonal composition and use of slow shutter speed. However, it appears that there is some issue with the tint which might have been caused by slight inaccuracy in the white balance. Btw, is it cropped from the original? Is it possible to make a 16:9 crop out of the original?

Thank you Srijan for taking the time to comment on my image. I think with the correction done in the other additional image added, the white balance was ok (at least on my calibrated monitor). Is early morning and the light is tending to magenta a little. Regarding cropping, this is the image I capture. The GFX100s is a medium format camera. I personally try to avoid 16:9 crop for my pictures. Just a personal choice.
