Grand Canyon River Trail by Jerry Baumann

August 2026 - Grand Canyon River Trail

About the Image(s)

This early morning photo was captured in the bottom of Grand Canyon, on the "River Trail) just across from Phantom Ranch. That trail connects the Kaibab Trail and Bright Angle trail along the south shore of the Colorado River. Taken on one of our hikes, on the lay-over day between the descent and the climb-out.

The shot was hand held, with a Canon G1X. It was shot at ISO-400, 1/400 sec, f-11, 24mm. Then cropped severely in the PhotoShop base.

Hi Jerry.
Lovely image. I really like the sepia conversion, adding to the atmosphere. Great hiker silhouette helping the viewer with the proportions.
My only suggestion would be to decrease the Highlight, Whites, and Shadows to avoid clipping the Whites and Blacks.
Another keeper.   Posted: 08/12/2026 15:10:35

Pierre, Thanks for your encouraging comments. I forgot to attach the original file. It was a jpeg, and unfortunately, I was only saving jpeg's in camera, and the highlights were really close to blown out.   Posted: 08/14/2026 05:00:48

Geoff, Thanks for your comments. Actually, after cropping tightly towards the sun (just around the corner), all I did was shift the color temp and tint. Between that shit and the haze in the canyon, it came out looking like sepia. Just good luck!   Posted: 08/14/2026 05:05:59

Hi Jerry- That's a real WOW shot. Your orig picture is lovely, but the small area you cropped it down to makes for a really unique and powerful image. The colors are wonderful and the hiker is perfectly located. I can imagine any improvements!   Posted: 08/15/2026 00:11:56

Hi Jerry, Your photo is wonderful and I really like your crop and how you adjusted the color. Your hiker along the canyon wall is telling an interesting story and I wonder what he see just beyond. As a suggestion, you might increase the grain a tad. Definitely a keeper.

In college I went on a geology field trip where we camped on the rim then hiked the Bright Angel trail, rim to river and back up the same day. It's a beautiful canyon.   Posted: 08/17/2026 21:46:34
