San Ysidro Capilla by Kirk Gulledge

May 2025 - San Ysidro Capilla

About the Image(s)

Image of a small private chapel and grotto in Santa Fe, New Mexico, that we happened to drive by on our last visit there about a year ago. This was built about 200 years ago as a labor of love and devotion on the property behind their home which is quite hilly and steep. It's hard to see from the road and cannot be accessed by the general public, but I felt that it was a strikingly beautiful little church ("capilla") which I think will hold about 12 people. And it also features a touching little grotto honoring the Virgin Mary on a level below the capilla. The beauty of the scene was really compelling, and I thought it made a striking image for a photograph. I took the image with my Panasonic Lumix FZ300 bridge camera, 8mm (wide angle), 1/500 sec at F4, ISO 100, hand-held.

Nice lighting Kirk and an interesting place, your depth of field has worked out well. Little cloud has added to the pic, good one.   Posted: 05/03/2025 22:47:59

Thanks, Geoff. It's a bit hard to arrange for clouds in New Mexico, which is quite dry and usually has clear blue skies. Just a lucky break that day.   Posted: 05/03/2025 23:12:03

Hi Kirk,
Nicely done. All in focus - with such a wide angle lens (I am assuming a 16 mm equivalent full frame) even f/4 is providing an excellent depth of field.
Lovely textures throughout. Fairly strong lines and multiple planes from the foreground to the background are providing a nice three dimension effect to the image.
The image is a "little" bright, but this is the way it is in this part of the world.
Another keeper!

Thanks, Pierre-
Yes, it is naturally a bit bright here, but I actually lightened the shadows somewhat because I thought they looked too dark. I guess that's just a matter of taste.
About the wide angle- yes, it is but I cropped the sides a bit, since they were seemed a little distorted. Wide angle certainly has advantages and disadvantages. Kirk   Posted: 05/09/2025 01:24:24
