Upper Niagara River by Pierre Williot

May 2025 - Upper Niagara River

About the Image(s)

Equipment: OM-1 Mark ii Camera, OM 150-400 TC lens, hand held but using a railing support. Manual Mode.

Set-up: ISO 800, 188 mm (full frame equivalent of 376 mm), 1/8 sec, f/29, EV 0, In camera electronic ND filter (4 stops)

Post processing, including slight cropping, light adjustments, de-noising, and slight soft vignette using ON-1 Photo RAW.

This is a narrow view of the Upper Niagara River from the Canadian side, approximately 200 metres from the Horseshoe Fall. Certainly not a safe area to swim! I use the "in Camera" electronic Neutral Density Filter (result of the image in RAW) to create the silky water effect.

The blurring of the water has worked real well Pierre, the birds on the rock a real bonus. You have done well with the lighting. Only a thought but it would have been really nice if the birds could have been made more dominant. This would have made more of the flowing water and less of the surroundings.   Posted: 05/04/2025 00:05:49

I like this, Pierre- enough roughness in the water to get a feeling of its strength, and enough smoothness to be able to focus on the rocks in the center. Is that a railroad or train going by in the background? You didn't mention it in your description, but it helps to tell the story of the location. Nice!   Posted: 05/04/2025 00:31:08

Thanks Geoff, I cropped my image further to isolate the rocky area were the 2 Canada Geese were standing. Here is the result.
Kirk: These were cars on a road. With the slow shutter speed (only 1/8 sec) the cars became blurry!   Posted: 05/04/2025 21:11:23
