Burford Church - England by Kirk Gulledge

November 2024 - Burford Church - England

About the Image(s)

This is a picture I took in the village of Burford in the Cotswolds in the UK in Oct, 2024. It is a picture of the Anglican church of St John the Baptist, which began construction in 1175 and was completed in the mid-1500s: a really beautiful parish church. It was cloudy and overcast most of the day, but for about 10 minutes the sun came out while I was at the church, and I was able to get this image with my cellphone. My phone tells me that it was shot at F2.2 at ISO 50 for 1/500 sec. I was attracted to the flowers in the foreground, the leading line of the pathway to the church, the sky and clouds that set off the steeple, dark cemetery stones to the right which emphasized the lightness of the church. (The Cotswolds are a very picturesque region of England, and Burford had many picture-worthy sights.)

Hi Kirk, Great image with a cell phone. Lovely exposure, color palette and contrasts.
My only recommendation is purely related to architectural photography - the perspectives must be perfect, otherwise it gives the impression that the buildings are falling backward! I took the liberty of adjusting the vertical lines and rotation (tools available in the "perspective" section of photo programs). This forced me to crop slightly your image (mainly the width).

Thanks, Pierre- Good observation and adjustment! I thought the perspective was good in my original, but I can see that you really improved it. Really appreciate it.   Posted: 11/15/2024 23:47:36

what did we do without our cell phone we always have them with us. Lighting exposure all worked well. I would possible cropped a little of the bottom, but would certainly have kept the path, it gives a pleasant flow into the pic.   Posted: 11/17/2024 02:02:20

Thanks so much, Geoff. We just left England and I used my cell phone for almost all of my pictures there. It's getting to be a lot more effort to carry camera and lenses (espcially since I need to push my wife's wheelchair), and I'm getting more comfortable with what my cellphone can do with a wide variety of lighting situations, as well as wide- and narrow-angle shots. Really appreciate your comments.   Posted: 11/17/2024 13:54:29

I like the perspective change and that the pathway is still there to take us visually up to the church. Only suggestion is maybe add a slight vignette to bring out the main part of the church some.   Posted: 11/17/2024 18:27:28

That's a great idea, Kathryn! (Wish I had thought of it.) I'll do that before entering it anywhere else.   Posted: 11/17/2024 19:36:19
