About the Image(s)

A couple of weeks ago I went out on the lake in a friend's boat hoping to get some pictures of the local loon(s). Soon after we left the dock it started raining and we didn't find any loons. On the way back to shore, I did get a picture of this mute swan pair and their five (yes, there are five) cygnets.
This image was taken with my Sony A7RV with a Sony 200 - 600 zoom, handheld, 1/200, f11; ISO 400. In post, I cropped in, adjusted brightness, contrast; added a vignette, and applied the lens correction in LR.

Nice. At first glance I thought it was a photo I'd taken! But I never captured 4 or 5 cygnets. It appears to be just a bit off on the horizontal making the swans appear to be swimming downhill. Not sure, but I might see how tilting them a little counterclockwise looks. Love swans!   Posted: 07/06/2024 19:51:31

I think you are right; unless all the water was draining out of the lake downhill.   Posted: 07/06/2024 22:02:16

Hi Dean,
Nice capture. Unless one of the cygnets is swimming behind one of the adults, I can count only! Are you trying to trick us?

No trick. The fifth one is hiding in the feathers of the rightmost swan. You can just see its head sticking up.   Posted: 07/06/2024 22:01:35

This one was quite nicely hidden!
Lovely family image. Great work.   Posted: 07/16/2024 15:42:50

Nice subject matter. You would have a lot better composition if you could get a lower viewpoint. The distracting elements on the water surface would be mostly negated.   Posted: 07/08/2024 14:52:15

Well, I am not getting in that cold water. It was raining.   Posted: 07/08/2024 14:54:30

Nice composition of this family group. I know it was raining which has left the image rather dull. Luminar Sklum and Nik Color effex have tools that will add brightness.   Posted: 07/09/2024 18:06:28

I do like your editing on this photo. Also the way the parents seem to be aware of you, yet the cygnets notice nothing. It is a good reminder to not be put off by rain when shooting. We're so used to seeing shots in better weather that we forget that nature contends with all conditions.   Posted: 07/10/2024 04:31:22

Thanks Diane. I was trying to keep my camera dry.   Posted: 07/10/2024 14:25:01

This is a great photo. The colors feel a little muted because it appears to almost be grey scale. Overall I think the detail is nice with all the raindrops adding a nice texture to the composition. I do agree with the others that brightening it might help the piece.   Posted: 07/15/2024 14:15:14
