About the Image(s)

Beetle in the Mullen

Attached are the edited and original images I took today in our backyard with a Sony A7R5; 1/640; f5.6; 200mm, ISO 200. I zoomed in quite a bit; darkened the background and lightened the subject; made a few other tweaks to exposure and color; and denoised with Topaz.
I don't know what type of beetle this is.

The beetle is well captured and well positioned in the frame. The yellow petals are obviously brighter than your main subject, so I would suggest darkening them, especially the one to the right.
I love the soft out of focus background.
Well done for capturing images in your own backyard.   Posted: 08/03/2026 17:29:29

I am not traveling much so my backyard is becoming my primary photo universe. Fortunately, I live in a beautiful area.   Posted: 08/08/2026 14:22:11

I'm not sure. I like the soft focus of the background & plant. However I feel that the back end of the beetle is more focused than the front end   Posted: 08/09/2026 05:48:16

Hi Dean,
This is a great capture of a Japanese Beetle. This beetle (invasive) is responsible for significant damage!
Nice details and texture.
The plant itself is in good focus, with the exception of the flower at the level of the head (far back).
You might have been able to have this posterior flower also in focus by bringing your f stop to 9 or 11, but as the subject is tack sharp, I do not believe that this is a significant issue.
Well done. A keeper.

This is a great capture! I love the colors and how sharp everything is. I think that I wouldn't change anything. Well done.   Posted: 08/18/2026 00:35:39
