About the Image(s)

Blue Jay dispute - my grandmother always said the Blue Jays were the bullies of the songbird world as they don't tolerate completion around the birdfeeder.

I took this image about an hour ago (July 5) when I remembered I needed a current image to submit this month. I was hoping to get either a bug/flower or bird in flight or chipmunk/squirrel, which are all usually available in our backyard this time of year. I took many images of each but this is the one that I think is most interesting, despite the inclusion of the birdfeeder in the near background.

I took it with my Sony A7R5 with a 200mm zoom, manual exposure (1/1600, F8.0), handheld, on continuous shooting. I cropped, straightened, removed noise, and added a vignette. Even at 1/1600 there was still some wing motion but I think it adds to the action shot.

Well done on a quickly submitted image.
I feel that it would've been a brilliant & much clearer story if you could've got around a little more to the right to make the feeder more part of the story rather than a distraction. You may have even been able to get more expression from the bird on the left. But nature rarely does what we want it to   Posted: 07/08/2026 06:16:54

Yes, when it comes to birds, one often has to take the moment, even if not ideal.   Posted: 07/08/2026 15:00:20

Great action shot! Maybe erase the feeder pole and platform on the left? My eye keeps going there. Even cropping most of it out makes me focus on the jays.   Posted: 07/10/2026 11:17:53

Thanks Cindy. Maybe just remove it.   Posted: 07/10/2026 13:06:13
