Southern Giraffe by Jaswant Madhavan

December 2025 - Southern Giraffe

About the Image(s)

This young male, Southern giraffe was taken at Amboseli National park in Kenya. Camera R5 Mkii, 200-800 f6.3-9.0 @ f9, ISO 4000, 1/640.
Processed in LR CC, Topaz Photo Studio and Mik Color Effex.

There used to be about 8 different subspecies of giraffe. All that has been condensed down to 4: Northern, Southern, Masai and Reticulated. It's a lot easier to remember.

Hi Jaswant,
Nice capture and funny tuffed ears! I would only suggest bringing up the subject a little by either increasing selectively its exposure, or decreasing the shadows.
Lovely expression.
Well done.

I love the unusual composition. You certainly have the knack of creating different and interesting angles in nature.
I appreciate the fact that the horns stand out above the tree line.   Posted: 12/11/2025 17:28:11

This is a nice capture. The subject is well placed and very detailed. I agree with Pierre, I think some minor adjustments to the lighting will really highlight your subject.   Posted: 12/15/2025 03:13:11

I love the giraffe - eyelashes and facial expression. This one is beautiful. I might have not done such a heavy vignette. I am headed to Kenya in July and can't wait!   Posted: 12/16/2025 21:55:52
