Alum Mountain by Diane Perry

December 2025 - Alum Mountain

About the Image(s)

I was still caught with a high workload in my daily job but I hope that you enjoy this photo.

This is Alum Mountain one of my regular hikes. It is the only place in the southern hemisphere where alum can be found above sea level. It is no longer mined but there are still mining relics to be found.
So I have presented the Australian bush in all of its magical messiness.

Diane,
I am glad I am not the only one that doesn't have an animal/bird image every month but it is a bit difficult to make heads or tails out of this image- there is a lot of vegetation, some of it blocking the background feature and a vanilla cloudless sky.   Posted: 12/05/2025 17:59:03

Not used to seeing this, I was confused, also. But I like the foreground, mid and background. If there was any way to balance the vegetation and the mountain so the left is not so heavy, that would be nice. But I imagine you were limited in the angle you could shoot. I might have tried to make the bush the main subject with the mountain in the background as secondary. I do like the messiness of it. And it is possible to darken the sky in post if there is any color in it. That would be nice.   Posted: 12/05/2025 21:19:56

Another simple nature scene this month! I suggest a few easy edits to improve this picture:
1. Darken the sky
2. lighten the bushes in the centre to add more contrast.
3. remove the branch in the bottom right corner.
4. Possibly clone out the thin tree extending into the skyline.   Posted: 12/09/2025 15:52:31

Hi Diane,
This is a difficult scene. It is difficult to examine/find the subject.
I agree with the above comments.
I took the liberty to do very easy global edits: decrease highlights, Decrease the shadows, and add a very mild vignette. Not perfect, but I believe that it is helping in seeing the vegetation and the mountain.   Posted: 12/10/2025 20:49:31

This is a nice photo. There is a lot to take in but once i do there is a lot to appreciate. I agree with Mervyn's suggestions as it would help for us to focus on less. Beyond that I think some adjustments to color, lighting and contrast could help make it pop a bit more. Interesting photo and a great submission.   Posted: 12/15/2025 03:21:04
