About the Image(s)

"Cayuga Duck"

Sony RX10M4 f/5.6 1/250 iso = 3200 200mm

This photo was taken in Branson, Missouri. We saw this unusual duck whose colors were just brilliant when it turned into the sun. My camera was back at the condo. So we returned the following day, cloudy of course, and he was still there. This is a domestic duck who originated in the United States.

Post processing included quite a few adjustments to bring out the iridescent coloring. I also sharpened the subject using masks in Camera Raw. Just learned how watching Simon d'Entremont videos. He's very good. And this is the best photo I've gotten using my RX10, so I am happy.

Also, tried a new save method from Camera Raw setting size limit and it was much easier. Always good to check out what's behind those ... on the computer!

Hi Cindy,
Very nice capture. Lovely colors and catch light.
It is always difficult to capture an animal that is backlit.
Overexposing a little can help bringing these details, but one needs to be carefull of not "blowing" the whites. I felt that there was a lack of details in the dark zones.
I took the liberty of trying some edits: increase contrast, decrease highlights, decrease shadows and a slight vignette. I also cropped your duck in the middle third of the image.

This is a beautiful duck and Pierre's edit has definitely enhanced the colors. I like the tight crop, but probably would have left a little more space in front of the duck to "move into". If not in the original, you could add some canvas on the left and use content aware fill or Generative AI fill.   Posted: 12/09/2025 15:16:45

This is a lovely photo. The subject is well placed and the ripples help to center the subject well. Your changes to the lighting really help bring out the subject, well done!   Posted: 12/15/2025 03:06:28
