About the Image(s)

I guess I am thinking about spring. I took this image last April during a butterfly migration near Austin. As usual, I used my Sony A7R5 - manual focus, ISO 100, 105mm Sony zoom, f/8.0, 1/320.
I cropped in, darkened the background, and added some clarity.

Very nice capture. Good color palette an focus. My only suggestion would be to decrease the shadows and highlights as the head and the body of the butterfly is a little dark. I took the liberty of "tweaking" a little bit your image and added a very subtle vignette.   Posted: 03/05/2025 12:21:00

What a great color palette with the orange and green background. And the sharpness is excellent considering how much you cropped.
Pierre's version does improve the detail in the head and body.
Do you know what kind of butterfly it is?   Posted: 03/08/2025 10:41:52

I don't know.   Posted: 03/10/2025 19:11:57

I agree with the adjustments of the shadows. I like butterflies from the side where the proboscis is evident, but then the beautiful wings don't show as well. This is nice. I believe it to be a variegated fritillary. Android users have lens installed and I use it often for identification.   Posted: 03/10/2025 18:19:00

This is a Variegated Fritillary butterfly (Euptoieta claudia).   Posted: 03/10/2025 19:48:22

I love the play of colors. On a bright sunny day with the harsh shadows a little fill flash might be useful to punch some light into the shadows.   Posted: 03/14/2025 05:16:24

Yes, I have a couple of flash units but rarely use them. Would work for fill in flash.   Posted: 03/14/2025 09:20:14

The lighting and color are beautiful. I do like Pierre's edits as it brings the butterfly's colors out more. My only edit would be to try and change the crop but it depends on how much you want the flower to be highlighted vs the butterfly.   Posted: 03/15/2025 13:50:09

I do like Jacob's comment. A square crop would mean less flower & more focus on the butterfly. Though with such a heavy crop already I don't know what the sharpness would be like   Posted: 03/22/2025 02:08:28
