About the Image(s)

A small troupe of Coatis has taken up residence in our local Arboretum this winter. They’ve discovered the feasting opportunities the garden provides, such as the fruit of the palm trees. I was lucky to get a few minutes with a couple of the visible at the outer edge of the tree before they buried themselves mostly out of view.

Nikon Z8, 600mm, 1/400 f/6.3 ISO1400

Processing: Cropped to minimize the distractions and improve it’s position in the frame. Adjusted the white balance and brightened the image overall, also increased saturation a bit. Denoise with Topaz AI.

First the subject is really cute. And cute does draw attention so that is a plus. I like that the subject has been bent (curved) into a sort of triangular shape that helps focus the eye. There is a nature story to the image as the Coati is clearly eating. The subject, based on color, is well separated from the background. The image also has a bit of an original look and that the coati is a seldom seen animal.   Posted: 03/02/2025 08:31:03

Cindy - this is a very nice capture of a rarely seen animal. What struck me most was the sharpness and clarity of the subject, and having a golden background helps the subject to stand out from the background. I find the image a bit busy, but then my perspective is as a photo club member and not someone getting ready for a PSA nature competition, where environment is more important, dare I say essential. In any event, nice job.   Posted: 03/06/2025 09:41:40

Cindy - what a coincidence. I just got back from south of Cancun. There were Coatis all over the area. My sister had never seen one and was amazed when a couple joined us for breakfast. They were quite brazen. In the evening, you could see troops of them wandering through the resort. I got a few photos, but they were always with tables and chairs in the background. Not exactly a natural setting as you have achieved here. Nice photo!   Posted: 03/18/2025 15:10:13

I'm one of those who has never seen one before, so I am veryveryVERY impressed :-) Everything about your presentation is just beautiful -- its shape, the gold-dominant background, and the sly way the animal is just sneaking up on the berry. The greenery completes the framing. (I'm jealous!)

Coatis are closely related to raccoons, which raid our bird feeders every night. We still love them. As always with you, the technical stuff is all good. Interesting pose and eating a bright red berry is very cool, as we professionals like to say. Nice shot!   Posted: 03/26/2025 00:32:52
