About the Image(s)

I took this shot at dawn in the Utah badlands. One of the most noteworthy points in interest in that area is Factory Butte. Most shots of it include the entire butte, but I thought that this shot showed off the intricate little erosion created canyons. I processed the image using the usual LRC sliders, as well as putting the image through Topaz Sharpen AI.

Settings: Canon R7 on a tripod with a Tamron 70-200mm lens, shot at 91 mm, 1/4 sec, ISO 100, f16.

First I think your little crop on the left was a great idea. I do not mind not showing the whole mountain. It is really all about the composition. So this scene showing all the textures and the shadows works well. You were left with a challenging sky and opted for heavy editing to add some drama to the sky. Well, you added the drama but the aggressive editing resulted in a fairly visible halo on the high part of the mountain on the right.

Matt K, on his Youtube channel has an easy to follow video on removing this type of flaw. I think it is under masking.   Posted: 02/08/2025 21:43:48

Larry, Thanks for this tip. Who is Matt K? I've often wondered how best to get rid of halos.   Posted: 02/09/2025 20:30:05

You sure have an eye for "abstract" types of landscapes like this, or anyway ones that feature patterns and textures. I really like your crop- there's a nice sense of flow along the ridge and the sky counter-balances the mountains well.
Another little nit to clean up is a dust spot in the lower left part of the cloud.
Beautiful image.   Posted: 02/09/2025 00:11:30

The first thing that struck me was that the image is extremely sharp, capturing intricate textures in the ridges and rock formations, but then I thought, is this over-processed. Vis-à-vis the image's resolution I just can't tell, so I'll go with sharp ?

Another positive is I found no visible noise or unwanted blur, even in finer details, and I thought you did a great job with your crop. All in all, a nice image

Not a bird!!! You post very artsy and beautiful landscapes. This might be your best. The color and fine sharp detail on the slope, with a little vegetation showing in sharp contrast here and there. I like! Nice colors in the sky and clouds. They look complementary to purple color of the mountain slope to me. But I'll dig around and see if I can find my color wheel (actually I don't have one). Nice!!   Posted: 02/20/2025 23:34:41
