Zigzag by David Kepley

January 2025 - Zigzag

About the Image(s)

I took this photo on a workshop in the badlands of Utah. I was standing on an cliff looking down at some amazing erosion lines below. The sun was in my face, lighting up the ridges and giving me some great shadows. Since there was so little color in the rocks I decided render this in B&W. So, is this too busy or does your eye want to follow those curving lines?

Settings: Canon R7, Tamron 70-200mm lens, shot at 70mm on a tripod. 1/250 sec, f14, ISO 400. I converted it to B&W in Silver Effects Pro. I also added some canvas in PS to the bottom and the left side so as not to cut off the wonderful lines of the zigzag.

David - I Love the shot, especially in B&W. This one would look great on the wall with a white matte and black frame.   Posted: 01/03/2025 23:40:19

I find this to be a nice abstract shot showing structure and line. You mention running it through Silver Efex during processing. for my 2 cents I would have pushed the Efex to get bolder and sharper black and whites so that the image would have more pop. Here the blacks and whites just feel soft. The bolder tones might be more dramatic.   Posted: 01/05/2025 14:35:24

Thanks for your thoughts Larry. I guess I'm always concern about pushing the whites and blacks too much so that I might get black holes or over exposed areas. I'll give it a try and post it.   Posted: 01/05/2025 23:19:45

David, I love the lines and flow of this. Wonderful abstract landscape.
I do like a really contrasty b&w so I just tried a simple tweak- bringing in the levels slider on both the black and white sides. I'll check back to see what you do with Larry's suggestion.   Posted: 01/21/2025 00:14:53
