About the Image(s)

This is another image from my trip to the Amazon rainforest near Manaus Brazil. Shot from a small boat as we searched for birds along the banks of the Rio Negro River. The Hoatzin (WHAT-sin) are large birds with an unusual appearance. Their call is loud. Groups of them move clumsily through the rainforest causing considerable commotion. Hoatzins are ruminators. Like cows, goats, and sheep, Hoatzins digest their food with the help of bacterial fermentation. Those ruminating mammals have specialized sacs in their gut called a ‘rumen’, whereas Hoatzins have an enlarged esophagus and crop. The Hoatzin is the only bird in the world that uses these foregut compartments instead of a stomach to digest food. Its diet consists almost entirely of leaves, which pass into the bird’s crop, where the process of bacterial fermentation gets fired up. Now isn't that cool! Image shot with a Nikon Z8 with Z400mm f4.5 lens. Processed in Lightroom Classic and Topaz Photo AI. Cropped in LR and run through Topaz AI to upscale, denoise and sharpen. Finished up in LR, making minor adjustments to highlights, shadows, exposure and clarity. I've included the original.

Forgot to mention that I used Lightroom's removal tool to get rid of some limbs and vines. Also camera settings: 400mm; f4.5; 1/640; ISO 1000.   Posted: 12/03/2024 13:02:09

Michael,
Sounds like a fun trip and thanks for the details about how the bird digests its food. Very unusual!

I thought the crop was appropriate and well done! I love that you caught one of the birds with its plumage in full display. It shows us the incredible colors in its feathers! Great! You also have the eyes of the birds in focus. About all I might suggest in the way of improvement would be to soften the background leaves a bit. You might try the new "blur" tool in LRC and see what you think.   Posted: 12/06/2024 16:51:41

Since this is a completely new bird for most of us I'm glad you gave us a two for one deal. I like the perched, posed bird so we can see what it looks like and then the open winged version show us some detail. As a photo of record I think it is perfect. But for me it just seems to busy with all the clear foliage and the left bird sort of facing away.
Still if I had been there I'd have taken the shot as I would want a this photo for one of those been there, done that moments. Thanks for posting.   Posted: 12/08/2024 13:00:22

This bird was on my target list when I went to Colombia, and although I managed a few snapshots I didn't get any nice behavior like this. I knew the bird was unique but didn't know about the digestive system, very cool.
You did a nice job with the post processing on this, I had to look to see where you did some removal, it is not apparent (which is good). Well done image.   Posted: 12/11/2024 20:49:08
