Lovely Limoges Fish Box by Alane Shoemaker

May 2023 - Lovely Limoges Fish Box

About the Image(s)

Before my major surgery on April 18, I was able to enjoy time with my dear friend in LA and then Kauai. I have just purchased a new Macro lens, and I took the following image of one of my friend’s lovely Limoges boxes from her extensive collection. The Limoges Box, a type of small hinged porcelain trinket box produced by Limoges porcelain factories near the city of Limoges, France, is made of hard-paste porcelain and collected worldwide. I love fish, so I chose the following box and took several photos and stacked them in Photoshop and added a vignette to highlight the box.

Here I employed my Nikon Z 50 body, Nikkor Z MC 105mm/f2.8 VR (105 mm, f/10, 1/160 sec, ISO 9,000)

What a fun shot. I hope that you are enjoying your new macro lens, although with this subject a macro lens may not have been required. This item was nicely captured in a clean format, and is as sharp as is required. I especially am enjoying the background and the vignette that you applied to this image. To my eye the actual box appears a bit washed out. Applying a bit of contrast should bring out a bit more of the native colors that you liked so much. The image does have a bit of a flat feel to it, although the reflection at the base added a bit of dimension to the presentation. I am wondering if one might add a bit of side lighting to the scene this might help a bit. Something to consider.   Posted: 05/08/2023 13:35:28

Hi Alane: Neat picture and quite creative. Your new 105mm macro lens will open up a totally new photography world for you. There are so many fascinating subjects you can photograph with a macro lens that most zoom lenses are not suited for.   Posted: 05/11/2023 10:21:42

What a fun project with such a colorful subject! May I make a few suggestions. The background is too bright making the subject slightly overblown. I would tone down the background first which will tone down the subject. Balance the light exposure between the two and if need be, dodge the fish in areas that seem slightly dark.   Posted: 05/11/2023 19:45:04

Hello Alane, Great color and sharpness in the Limoges box. I'm not too sure about the vignette. To my eye there seems to be a hazy incandescent light surrounding the beautiful box. I feel that distracts from the subject which is so very special.   Posted: 05/12/2023 21:34:21

Colorful and thanks for the history. I think you'll like macro photography. Nice subject, particularly with the history. Nice vignetting to increase subject interest.   Posted: 05/13/2023 16:56:17
