Homage To My Late Betta by Alane Shoemaker

October 2026 - Homage To My Late Betta

About the Image(s)

I loved my colorful Betta fish Ollie who just recently died. My October submission is a close-up of my little multi-colored pet.

Here I employed my Nikon Z 50 body with a NIKKOR Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR lens (1/250 sec, f/5.6. ISO 5,600). I edited in Photoshop Elements, Topaz, and Lightroom Classic.

It is a beautiful fish. I would clean up or darken the back round. If possible try to sharpen the fish and tone down the green or remove it.   Posted: 10/06/2026 12:11:18

Hi Alane: Ollie was a very colorful fish, do you plan on obtaining Ollie #2 at some point?

Composition is nicely balanced with Ollie in the upper right and nestled in between the leaves. Michael brings up a good point in darkening down the bright green leaves.

A really interesting subject.   Posted: 10/06/2026 20:11:17

Beautiful colors on Beta. I love how leaves are framing Ollie and its fins are spread in a beautiful display. I would probably darken greens a bit so they don't compete with your subject.   Posted: 10/08/2026 11:42:44

This is an interesting and color image of your favorite fish. The colors and coopetition are well done. It does have a bit of a 'snap-shot' or unfinished feel to it though. I think that the noise, specular heights and spots in the water lend to this impression. Yes, some of these elements may have actually been present, but are they needed in the final image? Here I might suggest removing the above-mentioned elements, blurring the background and perhaps darkening the leaves a bit all would help. The later suggestion was offered before, and as presented in your image the leaves are competing with the fish (the main subject). Darkening the leaves would ship the balance some and allow the fish to be more prominent. Finally, I might suggest sharpening the fish a bit since it is a bit soft.

I have included a version of this image where these suggestions have been applied to illustrate my thoughts. Let me know what you think …
