About the Image(s)

This ornate perfume bottle was a gift from Alexander Bedenko, a remarkable Ukrainian clarinetist my late husband and I first met when he was a fifth grader newly arrived in our community. We offered him a place to stay, encouraged his music, and helped him obtain his first good clarinet ??” a step that led him to Interlochen Summer Camp and, in time, to the world stage.

Today, Alexander is a multi-award-winning artist, recognized internationally as one of the most accomplished clarinetists of his generation. He has performed with leading conductors and orchestras across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
This little perfume bottle, intricate and luminous, reminds me not only of his extraordinary talent but of the quiet beginnings of a journey powered by kindness, perseverance, and art ??” and of the joy of watching someone you once helped take flight.

Here I used my Nikon Z50 camera with a NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR lens (50 mm, 1/80 sec, f/22, ISO 51,200) to collect this shot. I positioned the bottle against a black backdrop, used natural light, and edited the image in Lightroom.

Hi Alane: A very intricate piece of art photographed well.

Hi Impact colors against a black background commands the viewers attention.

Just my own opinion here and other photographers thoughts may vary; This small piece of art seems kind of lost against our large black webpage. My suggestion here would be to add a thin white border, it would define your composition. On how you frame the picture would be entirely up to you as to how you wanted to present the picture to the viewer.

Great presentation of the piece of Jewelry. Nice and clear with a clean background. The whole image does appear to be a bit washed out, with some of the detail in the piece being lost. Also, the depth of the color within is also diminished; especially with the rose/pink gems. Here I might suggest adding contrast and darkening the piece a bit using a curves layer to rectify this. Also, you might consider selectively adjusting the different colors as well. Finally, the background is featureless, giving the feeling that the idem is floating in space. Adding a very subtle difference between the base and background could address this point. I have included a version of the image in which these suggestions were applied, to illustrate my thoughts here.   Posted: 04/10/2026 17:15:48

Very nice. Lovely perfume bottle. I'm not sure about the black background. I might up the saturation, and/or contrast to see if it brings out the gems a little more.

Thank all of you for your helpful critiques. The increased saturation and the line to differentiate the base from the background certainly improve the image.   Posted: 04/14/2026 20:27:31
