December 2025 - White-throated Sparrow foraging for food after the first snow fall.

About the Image(s)

Here I employed my hand-held Olympus E-M1X camera with an OM System 150-400 mm lens (1/500 sec, f/5.6, Iso 800, 300 mm - full frame equivalent to a 600 mm lens). Post processed (Cropping, noise reduction, light adjustments) using ON1PhotoRaw.

Great image of this little critter. The image is nicely composed, and the bird is clear and sharp. One issue we all have with these types of images is to show the subject cleanly within its native environment. This is a bit of an issue here as the bird tends to blend into the background some, especially with the lower half of the bird. Perhaps if one were to slightly darken the background and bring up slightly the contract of the bird, the entire bird might separate itself from the background more effectively. Note thought that these are slight changes as we do want these types of changes to still look natural (at least for nature images).   Posted: 12/09/2025 01:04:47

Hi Pierre: A pure nature image of the bird in its native habitat. This is no set-up with a clean background that looks like "house cleaning" of distractions has been done.

Good pose, and then good sharpness on the bird. You even managed to catch a slight highlight in the upper part of the eye.
A good nature image of this small Sparrow.   Posted: 12/10/2025 04:58:05

Thanks for these comments. I agree that darkening the background could be helpful in bringing out the subject. My problem is that one need to over expose a little to obtain white snow (instead of "blueish" snow). I did not have to perform any cleanup around the bird. I was just patient for the bird to get where I wanted to be!   Posted: 12/10/2025 19:58:24

Pierre, great image of a White-throated Sparrow. Like the slight turn of the head and great color, sharpness and definition. Agree with Charles that the bird disappears into the background some what, so I darkened the background a small amount and it does seem to help the Sparrow to pop.   Posted: 12/12/2025 00:35:23

Pierre, I like the angle that you captured your little sparrow. I understand that you do not want a bluish tint to the snow. Did you try adding a subtle vignette to the image?   Posted: 12/14/2025 04:15:57

Hi Alane,
Thanks for the comment. I added a very slight vignette, but maybe it should have been a little stronger.   Posted: 12/15/2025 17:59:52
