About the Image(s)
We are fortunate to have a pair of these magnificent birds that live in the woods back of our house. They come to our bird feeders often and like peanut suet I set out. These birds are rather difficult to photograph well as they are quite skittish. I have enjoyed the challenge.
Here I used my tripod mounted Nikon D300 camera with a Nikon 200-400mm zoom lens @ 400mm (adding a 1.4X teleconverter which yields an effective focal length of 550mm) to capture this single frame (1/80 sec, f/7.1, ISO 800).

Very nice portrait of a Male Pileated Woodpecker with a nice muted background. Everything is tack sharp!
These birds can certainly damage any woodshed and other wood structure fairly quickly!
My only suggestion would be to leave a little bit more room on the bottom.
Nicely done.   Posted: 05/08/2025 21:15:43
