About the Image(s)

I love capturing images of common place everyday items, in uncommon ways. Toward that end here I used a flash to capture only selected areas of a few soda cans laying on their sides. My goal was to capture these identifiable subjects in a different and unusual way.

This single image was captured using my tripod mounted Canon R5 body with a Canon RF 24-105 f/4 lens (58 mm, 1/160 sec, f/18, ISO 800), using a speedlight flash (manual at 50 % power) as the sole light source. The settings were selected to eliminate the contribution of ambient light. In other words, with these settings, if the flash were not to fire, the image would be completely black. As such I could take this image on my dining room table, during the day, with normal ambient light, and control the light with the flash.

Finally, I used Photoshop to eliminate the color, remove subtle distractions (such as stamped text on the bottom of the cans), adjust the background / foreground, and to generally edit this image.

This was a fun challenge. What do you all think ?

I like it. I found the light to be just right in this minimalistic image. The texture is very well preserved.
Nicely done.   Posted: 05/08/2025 21:09:57

Hi Charlie: A very creative idea of using pop cans as a subject, something I would never have thought of doing.

Photographed using a high degree of expertise in the photography process to achieve this low light mood with success. You have provided a base for the cans to sit on which is important, then the monochrome conversion fits this scene very well to attain your desired mood in this very creative and interesting presentation.   Posted: 05/10/2025 14:48:12
