Dinner for a Worm by Barbara Hunley

April 2025 - Dinner for a Worm

About the Image(s)

I took this picture back in 2018 of a worm on one of my plants helping himself to dinner. There are features I could have improved on but did not have the knowledge at that time. It still remains a favorite as I like the lighting on the worm.

The camera used was a Nikon D300 (1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 200). No flash used.

Hi Barbara: I also like the lighting on the worm, the backlighting makes the worm appear rather transparent.

You mention things you could improve on today with more experience; I can relate to that comment as I look back at scenes I did many years ago and can see elements I could have improved on. Would do that same scene differently today.   Posted: 04/11/2025 05:50:39

Hi Barbara, this is a beautiful image! I like the lighting and color contrast. It is a backlighting, and you handled the front shadow part very well. Well done! Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 04/13/2025 11:58:02

An interesting image of this feeding bug with a lot of interesting color. The composition of the subject within the shot was quite effective. I do feel though, that clarity of the subject was a bit spotty and some of the more interesting areas are getting lost is the shadows. The later point could have been addressed in post processing. I realize that not every image we take will be our best, but for the purposes of this study group shouldn't we all try to show our best efforts?   Posted: 04/14/2025 17:33:36

Hi Barbara,
Nicely done. Sharp color contrast between the plant and the worm. The focus is on the caterpillar and the front edge of the plant.
My suggestions would be to decrease the highlights on the back side of the plant and decrease the shadows on the portion of the plant that faces the caterpillar.   Posted: 04/14/2025 20:39:54

Barbara, I like the contrasting colors of red and green. I agree with Pierre to try decreasing the highlights on the back of the plant.   Posted: 04/15/2025 21:44:48
