False Hellebore Leaf Design by Murphy Hektner, APSA

March 2025 - False Hellebore Leaf Design

About the Image(s)

False Hellebore is a plant found in our Cascade Mountains at high elevations in damp areas. Here I chose a monochrome conversion for this round; the monochrome had a little more interest and impact than the original color version. Not all subjects work well for a monochrome conversion. I thought the leaf design came out okay in monochrome as it shows the texture and shadow detail of the leaves quite well.

In this single capture I used my tripod mounted Pentax digital body with Tamron 90mm macro lens (1/20 sec., f/16, Iso 200). Soft cloudy lighting. The monochrome conversion and post processing was done in Elements

I agree with you that this monochrome presentation is quite effective in showing off the texture and shadow detail of the leaves. I do like how you darkened the bottom leaves. In doing so, the bottom leaf seems to come forward and is much more predominant. Now I think that something similar could be done on the small triangular patch of leaf in the upper right (right above the central point to the plant). In doing so even more depth could be added to the image. Nice capture with a lot of interest though.   Posted: 03/06/2025 10:45:11

Hi Murphy,
Very nice lines, textures, light and shadows "games". These are all very effective in B/W photography and perfectly used in your image. Congrats.   Posted: 03/17/2025 15:11:22
