Oriental Lily by Barbara Hunley

January 2025 - Oriental Lily

About the Image(s)

I love the fragrance of an Oriental Lily and decided a few photo shots were needed. It’s always an interesting flower to photograph. Most any angle will be pretty.

This photo was taken with my Nikon D300 mounted on a tripod, f/10, 0.6 sec shutter, ISO 200, and natural light. I shot three pictures that were stacked for this image

Great Image of this Lilly bloom. The magnification, composition and colors are wonderful within this image. The clarity and presentation of the bloom elements were well done indeed. I can easily get lost in my perusal of the detail here. The only suggestion I might venture may be to darken the background (including the green leaves) slightly to allow a greater separation of the bloom from the surrounds. This is a minor point though. Nicely done!   Posted: 01/02/2025 20:30:14

Thank you Charles. I agree with "burning" the background leaves slightly and make that adjustment quite often in other photos.   Posted: 01/03/2025 06:41:42

Hi Barbara: Really nicely done picture of this red lily, Stargazer I think. Especially like your composition and the way you have positioned the lily flower in the frame. You were paying very close attention in regards to the exact positioning of your tripod to not have any of the stamens merge with each other.
As you mention the fragrance of these Oriental Lilies is simply wonderful.
Find it interesting we have the same lily species that lives in a large ceramic container on our deck, and I did make a photo of it last summer also.   Posted: 01/03/2025 07:00:54

Thank you Murphy. I tried to look back on last year's photos but I guess they have been removed for 2025. I do not recall the picture from last summer, but would love to see it sometime. They have these lilies in the floral department of the grocery store all the time and I always have to stop and admire their beauty mixed with sunflowers and whatever else is in an arrangement.
My photographer mentor has always said to "hoover the area" before taking pictures. Get the best composition angle possible by studying the subject or area. Sometimes I take a few shots to see if anything unusual comes up in the picture I had not noticed.   Posted: 01/07/2025 06:33:37

Hi Barbara, this is a beautiful image, very sharp and detailed. I like the colors and lighting. Interesting composition! I feel it isn't easy to compost a flower well, but you did a great job. Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 01/03/2025 14:18:49

Hi Barbara,
Very nice capture. Can you specify which lens you used? Except for the leaves in the background, and the left petal a little soft, everything is tack sharp using only 3 slices at f/10. Was it a slightly wide angle lens?
Great composition and color palette. The angle of the flower adds to the appeal.
Great image.   Posted: 01/05/2025 14:51:38

Pierre...to answer your question, the three stacked photos were taken with the Nikon 18-200mm lens and the shooting range was 112mm. They were later stacked in Helicon.   Posted: 01/07/2025 06:18:17

Nice capture of a beautiful flower. After the zoom meeting a couple of days ago, I can see what he was suggesting with the background but would never have thought it it myself.   Posted: 01/12/2025 21:39:10
