Pink Daisies (or at least one) by Barbara Hunley

November 2024 - Pink Daisies (or at least one)

About the Image(s)

I purchased a small bunch of these pink daisies at the grocery store to experiment with and my Nikon 105 macro lens.

I collected a stack of nine images (1/2 sec, f/11, ISO 200) using my tripod mounted camera. Natural light from the windows.

For the backdrop, I used a piece of black velvet fabric draped over a piece of foam board.

Hi Barbara: A very pleasant vivid pink daisy type flower picture. Your stack of 9 images produced really good sharpness from bottom to top of the frame.

The black top right corner to me adds some depth to the picture which nicely done.

Another alternative to explore would be to move in very close and do not show any black background. In doing so you may need to clone in a little pink to have a totally pink background. At this magnification am pretty sure you would need to do some image stacking to obtain enough depth of field for total sharpness.   Posted: 11/10/2024 06:37:55

Hi Murphy!
Thank you for the critique. I pondered the black area as you have suggested and almost submitted a different pose with no background to show. I ended up submitting this one knowing it would bring in interesting viewpoints and always something to learn from.   Posted: 11/10/2024 07:25:01

Hi Barbara,
Very nice focus staking with plenty of details and soft light.
I am sure that it took you a while to find the perfect flower - In my experience, as soon as we enter the world of macro-photography, spider webs, insects, eggs and other defects are present everywhere!
Excellent submission.   Posted: 11/10/2024 17:51:20

Thanks Pierre! I love going to the local grocery store where they have a $3.99 selection of flowers in the floral dept. Never know what they will have to select from. Detail has always been my thing so anything macro catches my eye immediately.   Posted: 11/16/2024 05:35:06

Nice work Barbara. Good selection for a subject. The lack background could have some diffuse blurred color strips to simulate more flowers in that area. It is a nice image, well done.   Posted: 11/15/2024 22:05:17

Thank you Neal. I always enjoy the stacking method and really like using Helicon to stack the photos.   Posted: 11/16/2024 05:27:30

An pleasing presentation. I don't need to echo what was said previously. One outcome of the stacking process is that image can begin to look a bit flat and lack some dimension. In my images, I address this in post processing after the stacking. Here I might suggest darkening slightly, the outermost petals surrounding the central core. This might aid in the separation of the core of the bloom from the rest of the bloom and add back a bit of depth to the image. I have included an example of this to illustrate my thoughts. Nice Job!   Posted: 11/25/2024 21:11:58

Beautiful image, Barbara! I agree with Murphy that another alternative is not to have any black background.   Posted: 11/25/2024 22:05:12
