This photo was taken during the Diamond Head Classic men’s college basketball tournament at the University of Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center on December 24, 2023. I was sitting behind the basket for this shot, about 15-20 feet above the floor. I like this location because generally the action is coming towards the rim – and therefore the players are looking towards the camera.
There are three main disadvantages of this location. First, the referee at the base line sometimes blocks the view to the players; second, the basketball stand often blocks the view to the players; and third, many good action shots are diminished when the ball goes behind the backboard. But for a few situations, like a drive to the basket, this is a good vantage point.
My camera is a Canon 7D Mark II (1.6 crop sensor), and the lens is a fixed focal length 85mm lens. The settings were f:2.0, ISO 2500, at 1/2000 sec.
Do you think the action in this photo is good enough for acceptance in PJ international exhibitions?

Hi Gerald. This is a great capture of a shooting basketball player captured at the point of release. I do not think the photo can be improved other than perhaps more basket could be shown, but the idea of the target is still present. Whether it will work in PJ international exhibitions?
You have not mentioned how the photo was processed.   Posted: 07/04/2024 02:05:27

I always use the raw processor, and then I process in basic Photoshop, usually using shadows-highlights and cropping, if necessary. That's about it.   Posted: 07/04/2024 03:58:21

Gerry, Very nice image as usual. Peak action, sharp and well exposed. I am impressed at how high the shooter has jumped. I think this one should do well in exhibitions. Bruce   Posted: 07/04/2024 22:15:40

Gerry - great action shot and agree with comments above. The shooter has some "jumps" for sure. I do agree with Ronald if possible to show a little more basket. Otherwise, great action and surrounding players focused on the ball!   Posted: 07/07/2024 23:35:13

Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately, if I show more of the basket, I'll be showing the stantion of the basket, and it is very distracting. So I shoot to avoid it or I crop it out.   Posted: 07/08/2024 00:13:38

Gerry, that is a real jump to say the least. Peak of action, Sharp. Thanks for the additional explanation about the basket.   Posted: 07/23/2024 22:53:44
