Skimboarding by Dr Isaac Vaisman, APSA, PPSA

October 2022 - Skimboarding

About the Image(s)

Skimboarding is a board sport in which a skimboard (much like a surfboard but smaller and without fins) is used to glide across the water’s surface to meet an incoming breaking wave and ride it back to shore. Unlike surfing, skimboarders begin on the beach by dropping the board onto the thin wash of previous waves. It originated in Southern California when Laguna Beach lifeguards wanted to surf the local shore breaks that were too fast and shallow for surfboards.
This image was created at Dania Beach – Florida a few years ago using a Nikon D300s with the NIKKOR zoom lens DX 18-300 mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 105 mm (157 mm 35mm equivalent) and these settings: ISO 200, f/7.1 and 1/400 sec. Image was PP in Lightroom and cropped.

Hi Isaac. Another original style of photo from the beach side. In Australia it is non-competitive and is more about fun. You have done well to capture the rider with both feet off the board hair sweeping back accentuating movement and speed. Perhaps more space could have been allowed in front of the rider but this version ok. I remember kids doing this on beaches in which you have shallow water and at times rather dangerous especially for swimmers coming out of the water that did not see these riders. Many had homemade boards from about 5mm plywood not this very upmarket fibreglass board.   Posted: 10/03/2022 21:30:57

Hi Isaac, an interesting skinboarding photo of you. The surfer's posture and focused look, as well as the waves in the background with the whitecaps give the photo a special dynamic.   Posted: 10/15/2022 08:47:02

Wow Isaac, I love how your image shows the definition of the muscles and hair. I agree with Hans about the background waves. Bruce   Posted: 10/19/2022 23:28:28

Perfect timing, this rider has it all going on. Feet off the board, hair flying, his muscle definition, the stance and facial expression. Sharp image of an interesting activity, well done   Posted: 10/20/2022 05:20:07

I'm used to the skim boarders in Hawaii running towards the incoming wave and banking into the wave and then riding the wave into the shore. This is a lot more subdued, but the feet off the board and flying hair show the action. I think the waves in the background are a little distracting, especially the lack of detail in the top wave.   Posted: 10/27/2022 02:54:28
