Title: A Salute by a Disabled Champion
While in Cairns, North Queensland, I went to a local rugby league match. As part of the pre-game activities a game was being played with players with disabilities, which is called Touch Rugby. It has some similarities to normal rugby with the significant exclusion of no tackling. You have to just touch the opposing player, and they must stop and play the ball behind. The game then goes on. Included are some able body players whose primary role is to just assist the disabled to play and observe the rules.
At the conclusion of the game, the players received great applause and cheering from the crowd. It was rather moving. Two disabled players seemed to enjoy the responses from the crowd and acknowledged them with hand waving and gestures to continue the excitement.
