This photo was taken at Sandy Beach on the east shore of Oahu in December a few years ago. The surfers were a long way away from the shore, perhaps 150-200 yards, so this resulting image is heavily cropped and represents only about 30% of the original amount of information captured in the frame. I thought the red hair was different, and he liked to go airborne whenever he ended his run, so whenever he caught a wave, I followed him.
My camera is a Canon 7D Mark II (1.6 crop sensor), and the lens is a EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II zoom lens at 400mm. The settings were f:8, ISO 400, at 1/1250 sec in bright sunlight.

Hi Gerald. What a great photo of a sport that has its real challenges in terms of closeness you can get to the competitors while competing. I've tried the same and in trying to get good quality photos its impossible even to get facial recognition. His head is down so he is not recognisable but this is the behaviour of the professional sportsperson. Your photo is sharp, well exposed and colours are bold. You have captured the water droplets and the details of the wave splendidly. A fine classical surfing photo.
Some may say he could have more space to move into but this is only minor worth a look though, you would get future wave action as well.   Posted: 12/07/2024 00:07:47

Gerald, indeed peak of action as well. Great pose. Very sharp and the water splash framing the surfer adds to it. Some purist judges may say why the surfer is not looking at the camera ?? Go and figure....   Posted: 12/16/2024 14:10:45
